With days becoming shorter and the weather becoming cooler its time to get inside and play some racquetball. The first competition will commence in a few weeks time so anyone who wants to play should be getting in some practise now.
Castlebar Racquetball Club`s Autumn Competition will begin shortly in An Sportlann. This competition will be a round robin league with 4 or 5 skill divisions. There will be also a competition for beginners.
Matches will be usually scheduled for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and fixtures will be published on the website. Entry is 15€ for adults and 5€ for juniors (Under 18). Entry fees for students is 10€.

Racquetball provides a great form of exercise which is not boring and you can burn about 700 calories per hour playing at moderate level. The equipqment you need to start plkaying racquetball are a racquet, racquetball ball, runners that will not mark the court floor and goggles to protect your eyes. Castlebar Racquetball Club will begin junior coaching for boys & girls on Thursday 4th of October at 7pm at the racquetball courts in An Sportlann.
Registration is 5€ per player. A coaching fee of 3€ per player(discounts for families) is payable for each coaching session on Thursday evenings.
Racquets, balls and goggles availble to new players. New players should wear runners and tracksuit.
Michael Kelly`s Team have won the 26th Team League Championships after the completion of the final on Tuesday evening 24th April.
Kevin Jennings Team who were defeated 7 games to 6 are the runners-up.

All club members are invited to the Awards Night for all competitions on Friday 27th April in Mick Byrnes, Main St.
Over sixty players competed in the 21st Castlebar Open held in An Sportlann and De La Salle Sports Centre last weekend. There were 10 competition grades to be competed for and Castlebar players were successful in 3 of the grades.
Shane Moran won the highly competitive Novice singles when he defeated Shayne Heaney(Annaghdown) by 2 games to 1 in the final. Earlier he defeated another Castlebar player, 17-year-old Patrick Bourke who did well in reaching the semi-final. The Novice singles had a total 19 players competing for promotion the Racquetball Ireland rankings and Moran now moves up to the next level.
In the Men’s C/D Doubles, Padraic Ryder(Newport) along with Stevie Quinn(Tipperary) defeated Kevin McNamara(Castlebar) and Eoin Tynan(Fethard). The winners earlier defeated Castlebar pair, Michael Gielty and Kieran Conway who did well in reaching the semi final of this event.
Castlebar`s Majella Haverty and Katie Kenny, current European Doubles Champions won the Women’s Doubles easily defeating Donna Ryder (Newport) and Elaine Murphy(Tipperary) in the final. Other local players who lost out in finals were Niamh O’Neill(Castlebar) who was defeated by Kate Ryan (Rossmore) in the Women’s C/D Singles and Donna Ryder(Newport) who lost to Aisling Hickey(Rossmore) in the Women’s Open Singles.
The top event, the Men’s Open Singles was won for a second time by Patrick Hanley from the Fermoy Club, he defeated Steve O`Loan from Queens, Belfast in the final. Best of the local players was Kevin Jennings who reached the semi final despite a long lay off from the sport due to injury.
Results of other grades were, Stevie Quinn(Rossmore) winner in the Men’s C/D Singles, Joe Glynn(Athenry), Men’s Over 50 Singles winner and Patrick Hanley & Kevin McNamara in the Men’s Doubles.

The 21st Castlebar Open Racquetball Tournament will be held in An Sportlann & St Geralds College on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th March.
Closing date for entries is Sunday 18th March. You can enter on line at the Racquetball Ireland website. The Castlebar Open in a European Racquetball Tour event and is supported by Castlebar Credit Union Ltd and Mayo Crystal.

With the exception of 2 finals, the Winter Rollout Competition has been completed.
In Division 1, Kevin McNamara defetaed Padraic Ryder by 2 games to 1 in the final. In the Division 2 Final, Patrick Bourke was the winner with 2 - 1 win over Michael Burke. The Division 1 Plate winner is Kieran Conway while the the Division 1 Blue & White Finals remain to be played.
The Division 2 Blue final was won by Brian Flannery, while Terry O`Hara Jnr won the Division 2 Plate Final, Noel Walsh was the winner in the Division 2 White Final.
