Successful 21st Castlebar Open

Over sixty players competed in the 21st Castlebar Open held in An Sportlann and De La Salle Sports Centre last weekend. There were 10 competition grades to be competed for and Castlebar players were successful in 3 of the grades.

Shane Moran won the highly competitive Novice singles when he defeated Shayne Heaney(Annaghdown) by 2 games to 1 in the final. Earlier he defeated another Castlebar player, 17-year-old Patrick Bourke who did well in reaching the semi-final. The Novice singles had a total 19 players competing for promotion the Racquetball Ireland rankings and Moran now moves up to the next level.

In the Men’s C/D Doubles,  Padraic Ryder(Newport) along with Stevie Quinn(Tipperary) defeated Kevin McNamara(Castlebar) and Eoin Tynan(Fethard). The winners earlier defeated Castlebar pair, Michael Gielty and Kieran Conway who did well in reaching the semi final of this event.

Castlebar`s Majella Haverty and Katie Kenny, current European Doubles Champions won the Women’s Doubles easily defeating Donna Ryder (Newport) and Elaine Murphy(Tipperary) in the final. Other local players who lost out in finals were Niamh O’Neill(Castlebar) who was defeated by Kate Ryan (Rossmore) in the Women’s C/D Singles and Donna Ryder(Newport) who lost to Aisling Hickey(Rossmore) in the Women’s Open Singles.

The top event, the Men’s Open Singles was won for a second time by Patrick Hanley from the Fermoy Club, he defeated Steve O`Loan from Queens, Belfast in the final. Best of the local players was Kevin Jennings who reached the semi final despite a long lay off from the sport due to injury.

Results of other grades were, Stevie Quinn(Rossmore) winner in the Men’s C/D Singles, Joe Glynn(Athenry), Men’s Over 50 Singles winner and Patrick Hanley & Kevin McNamara in the Men’s Doubles.
